Scolio-Pilates®
A movement-based approach to scoliosis care that builds strength, alignment, and control.
Pilates by itself is an exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s! Learn more about the history here.
Scolio-Pilates® is a specialized blend of Pilates and physical therapy designed to address the unique needs of those with scoliosis.
Developed by Karena Thek, it focuses on improving alignment, building strength, and increasing body awareness through movements tailored to your specific curve.
At BlendFit, Mary Beth Blend integrates her training as a certified Scolio-Pilates® Practitioner into each client’s plan — using it to improve alignment, build stability, and reinforce the postural corrections learned through other methods.
This approach allows treatment to feel both effective and engaging, while still being tailored to your unique curve.
Virtual and in-person sessions available.
What to Expect
During a Scolio-Pilates® session, you’ll move through guided exercises that are specifically adapted to your spinal curve and movement patterns.
With Mary Beth’s instruction, you’ll learn how to:
Strengthen the muscles that support your spine in a balanced and intentional way
Improve body awareness and control through precise, guided movement
Stabilize corrected postures so they carry over into daily life
Move with greater confidence while staying aligned and supported
Each exercise is purposeful and adjusted in real time — helping you feel the difference in how your body moves and responds.
In addition to in-session treatment, you’ll receive guidance on exercises and postural awareness to help you continue your progress in daily life!
Together you’ll create a program that allows your spine to work “less hard” – giving the tissues a chance to take a break from working so hard can mean less stress, strain, and pain.
Select scoliosis-specific corrections are guided with wedges to nudge the spine towards center, and then paired with exercises to strengthen the body in that position.
Mary Beth always encourages her clients to,
“Move through each exercise listening to your body and its needs as you move through each exercise.”
How it Works
How Scolio-Pilates® Supports Your Spine
Scolio-Pilates® works by combining targeted strengthening with curve-specific alignment strategies.
Rather than performing standard Pilates exercises, each movement is adapted to your body to support more balanced muscle activation and improved posture.
During your sessions, Mary Beth guides you through:
Curve-specific positioning to support better spinal alignment
Controlled, intentional movement that reinforces stability and coordination
Targeted muscle engagement to strengthen areas that need support
Real-time adjustments to ensure exercises are working effectively for your body
This helps your body learn new movement patterns that carry over into your daily life.
Why It Works
Strength Meets Alignment
Scolio-Pilates® builds on the foundation of traditional Pilates by incorporating scoliosis-specific corrections into every movement.
Balance
Alignment
Stability
Movement
This approach helps:
Improve muscular symmetry by strengthening weaker areas and supporting balance
Reinforce proper alignment during movement, not just at rest
Increase stability and coordination throughout the body
Support long-term spinal health through consistent, controlled movement
How much you move matters just as much as how much you strengthen.
The Results
Scolio-Pilates® is designed to help you build strength in a way that directly supports your spine and improves how you move throughout your day.
As you continue working through your personalized program, you may begin to notice:
Improved postural alignment and body awareness
Greater strength and stability in the muscles that support your spine
More balanced movement patterns
Increased confidence in how your body feels and functions
These changes are not just experienced during sessions — they carry over into how you sit, stand, and move in your daily life.
Part of a Personalized Blend
At BlendFit, Scolio-Pilates® is one part of a comprehensive, individualized approach to scoliosis care.
Mary Beth integrates it alongside the Schroth Method and physical therapy techniques to create a treatment plan that is tailored to your body and evolves with you over time.
This blended approach allows strength, alignment, and movement to work together
— supporting long-term progress and helping you feel more confident in your body.
This is where strength supports alignment and where consistent movement leads to lasting change.
Virtual and in-person sessions available.
“Mary Beth helped me learn and understand my “S” curve (how my ribcage needs to stay to the left while my left oblique remains long. My right shoulder goes back, and my left goes down), and she also taught me then how to best move my body with this new alignment.
After a few months of working with Mary Beth, I started running again. She re-trained my running posture and customized a blended exercise plan for my unique curve and needs that I’ve now been using now for years! My scoliosis symptoms are reduced the more I apply it and now I’ve run up to 19 miles after 3 years in a recent Bryce Canyon Ultra event out west! I’m forever grateful and supportive of the work Mary Beth does.”
